The Difference Between IPL & Laser Hair Removal

The main difference between laser hair removal and IPL (Intense Pulse Light) is the light technology used to do it. Laser hair removal is the use of specific light frequencies to target the hair follicle whereas IPL uses a broad range of wavelengths, typically 500nm to 1200nm, which is not so targeted.

Laser & IPL Are Not The Same!

Laser hair removal is not the same as IPL. Although they both involve the use of light and they are both designed to remove hair, IPL uses a broad spectrum of light of different wavelengths with a high amount of unfocused energy that is absorbed by the hair and the skin, whereas laser is a concentrated focused single beam of light targeted at the hair follicle, disconnecting it from the blood supply. Laser is more effective at removing hair than IPL generally.

IPL is effective when used for skin rejuvenation and anti-ageing therapies, pigmentation treatments and some other vascular conditions.

The melanin then absorbs the energy and converts it into heat. This results in the hair follicle being permanently damaged while preventing injury to the surrounding tissue. IPL, on the other hand, uses a broad range of light aimed over a larger area and therefore it is not as targeted at the hair follicle. When comparing laser hair removal with IPL Hair Removal, IPL is not as effective as a laser.

 

 

How Long Does It Take?

To achieve smooth and hair-free skin you will require a minimum of 6 laser hair removal sessions, normally 4 – 6 weeks apart depending on hair growth, whereas IPL would normally require at least 12 sessions.

Laser hair removal sessions are quick, for example, full legs can be lasered in 30 minutes, underarms in only 10 minutes.
